Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most popular Italian wines. The first recorded mention of a wine called “Brunello” was in 1385, when it was mentioned in a document from the town of Montalcino. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that Brunello di Montalcino began to gain its reputation as one of the finest wines in the world, when farmers began to produce a red wine with grapes grown in the area. The vine was called “Brunellino”, which was later identified as a variety of Sangiovese.

In 1966 it received the DOC certification and in 1980 it became the first Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG).

In 1842, Clemente Santi, a farmer from Montalcino, planted a new variety of Sangiovese grape that he believed would produce a superior wine.
Santi’s grandson, Ferruccio Biondi-Santi, took over the family estate in 1888 and began to experiment with different aging techniques.
In 1891, Biondi-Santi released the first vintage of Brunello di Montalcino that had been aged for over a decade in oak barrels. This wine was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Brunello di Montalcino as a world-class wine. Before being sold, Brunello must age at least two years in oak barrels.

Montalcino, a medieval Tuscan town, is famous throughout the world for the production of Brunello wine, defined as “the king of reds and the red of kings“. Montalcino is just 40 km from the city of Siena and its territory consists of a single large hill, where vineyards alternate with olive groves. A territory of great beauty which in 2004 became a World Heritage Site.

Here there are 4 denominations of wine, all produced within the Municipality of Montalcino:
-Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
-Red of Montalcino DOC
-Moscadello di Montalcino DOC
-Sant’Antimo DOC

Composed of 100% Sangiovese grapes, this wine has great longevity and requires great refinement before reaching an excellent quality level. In the glass it shows a ruby red hue. It has an intense and persistent aroma with hints of fruit and vanilla but also of aromatic wood. The taste is tannic and robust.

In the years since, Brunello di Montalcino has continued to grow in popularity. Today, it is one of the most sought-after wines in the world, and it commands high prices on the international market. Brunello di Montalcino is known for its deep ruby color, its complex aromas, and its long, lingering finish. It is a powerful wine that is best enjoyed with hearty meats or game.
The production of Brunello di Montalcino is strictly regulated. The wine can only be made from grapes grown in the Montalcino region of Tuscany, and it must be made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. The grapes must be hand-picked and fermented in small oak barrels. The wine must then be aged for at least five years, two of which must be in oak barrels. After aging, the wine is bottled and released for sale.
